Restored car brings back lost pride

The scion of the House of Mewar,Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur stands a proud man.One of his most prized possessions a 1924 Rolls-Royce 20 HP,Barker Tourer (GLK 21) that was selected by the Pebble Beach Concours dElegance panel to participate in the event,won the highly-feted Lucius Beebe Trophy on Sunday.
Incidentally,the car lay in a corner of the Zenana Mahal in The City Palace in a dilapidated condition for more than two decades,until Shriji chanced upon it and decided to restore the vintage automobile.The restoration kicked off in 1999.M/s Hofmanns of Henley were given the job of overseeing the project.They put Rolls-Royce restoration expert Graham Ashley-Carter in charge of the assignment.Andrew Wood,an engineering expert and founder of the UK Rolls-Royce specialist company P&A Woods,and John Fasal,author of books like Rolls-Royce Twenty,were also roped in to work on the project.Some of the work was outsourced to the UK and the rest was ably carried out in the Palace Motor Garage by the team of Anu Vikram Singh,Keeper,Vintage and Classic Car Collection (VCCC,Udaipur).
In October 2005,Winston Teague and David Aston of Hofmanns of Henley travelled to Udaipur to carry out the complete electrical overhaul.They overhauled the fuse box and the rewired the full electrical system.The starter was turned over and new tail lights,wiper motor,wiper arms and blades were refitted.The RR GLK 21 also had a hand lamp that could be manually adjusted by a lever at the back.It was very useful for shikaar.This lamp was an extra fitment ordered specially for India and it was made by Stephen Grebel of Paris.This spotlight was also completely stripped and restored as was the Klaxon horn, says Shriji,who is currently in California.The car was painted blue.After the restoration process that took almost eight years,RR GLK 21 was resurrected in the Udaipur palace garage.Recently,the House of Mewar released a coffee table book titled,The Royal Udaipur RR GLK 21 Classic drive from Derby to Udaipur to Pebble Beach andContinues dedicated to the history and restoration of the venerable four-wheeler.
